Unchain Cumberland County is a group of dedicated volunteers who started out with one purpose: to provide free fences for families who wished to unchain their dogs, but could not afford a fence. We wanted to follow in the footsteps of Amanda Arrington, founder of “Coalition to Unchain Dogs” in Durham, NC. We quickly learned that the need went far deeper than fences, and we could not walk away from those sad eyes of the back yard dogs.
Our first call came from a lady who was concerned about a dog next door who lived in a cage, right out in the sun, day after day, never out of that cage once in ten months. When all else failed, we bought the dog and the cage. That’s when our policy changed to: “Whatever it takes”.
Every call for help is taken very seriously, and we have not failed to provide whatever is needed to ease the suffering of animals. We have given food, medical help, spay and neuter, insulated dog houses and bedding, treats, toys, food and water bowls, and we even do fences!
Chaining is a cruel and dangerous practice, often becoming a life sentence for many back yard dogs. These kind and gentle companion animals often die at the end of their chain when all hope is gone. All they ever wanted was to be with you, their family...
